The Schubert barbus is a fish characterized by activity and beauty. All her habits are characteristic of barbs. In the content of such a pet does not cause particular problems, but it is required to provide some conditions that are quite important. It is required to keep a barbus in a flock - so it lives in natural conditions.
Habitat
The birthplace of fish is China. In addition, you can meet her in Vietnam or Taiwan. The name "Chinese barbus" is common throughout the world. The gold variety was artificially bred by T. Schubert, and is now popular. By nature, the color of the fish is more green, without a pronounced golden hue. Currently, such a barbus is practically absent in the aquarium, it was replaced by golden individuals.
The Chinese barbus lives in rivers and lakes; the acceptable water temperature is 18-24 degrees. The fish finds food in the surface layers of water, almost never dropping below five meters.
Fish Description
The natural shade of the Schubert barbus is greenish, but now such individuals are practically not brought into the aquarium. After the fish becomes sexually mature, it forms a small antennae in the corners of the mouth. Their color is yellow-gold, dots and stripes of black color are randomly scattered throughout the body. The fins are reddish, the tail split into two parts.
The maximum body length of an adult barbus is 7 centimeters, and the maximum life span is about five years.
Living with other fish species
In addition to barbs, you can also place other active and rather large fish in the aquarium. Despite some feedback from the owners, reporting that the barbs showed aggression by biting other aquarium inhabitants and cutting off their fins, this behavior is most likely due to the low number of barbs. However, given the energetic nature of the fish, it is undesirable to keep it together with motionless fish: for example, with gouras or cockerels. The barbecue will be able to coexist perfectly with the Sumatran barbus or other fish similar to them. Shrimp can easily live next to these fish, but small invertebrates can suffer from them.
Content Issues
The barbus is perfect for beginner fish breeders; it adapts well to a new habitat, without suffering from loss of appetite and activity. However, the aquarium in which it is planned to keep the fish must be filled with aerated and ultimate clean water. It is worth paying special attention to the fact that such a fish will not be able to get along equally well with others. For example, goldfish will certainly experience stress in such conditions.
Aquarium content
It is desirable to contain more than six fish in the aquarium, so they will develop better, behave more energetically and actively, it will be more interesting to observe them. Given the small size of the fish and its flock habitat, the total capacity of the barbeque for living should be at least 70 liters.
To live, the Schubert barbus needs sufficient freedom.Along with other representatives of similar species, this fish adores the flow and clean water enriched with oxygen. A high-quality filter, its periodic replacements and medium strength current will need to be provided. The barbus is not particularly demanding on the parameters of aquarium water, adapting perfectly to different conditions. However, it will be ideal if you provide them with water with a temperature of 18-23 degrees, pH in the range from 6 to 8, and dHot from 5 to 19.
Feeding Features
Being in natural conditions, the Schubert barbus eats a variety of insects, worms, larvae, detritus and aquatic vegetation. In other words, this fish is a real example of unpretentiousness in nutrition. In order for the fish's vital functions and health to remain at a high level, it only needs to provide food in live or frozen form, spinach, finely chopped cucumbers or zucchini, which need to be boiled.
Gender difference
The females of the Schubert barbus look more faded due to the simplified coloring, their abdomen is rounded, plump. In addition, they are slightly larger in size than males. Those are small, but their color is more vivid and pronounced. During spawning, the fins of males acquire a bright red hue. In general, fish that have reached adulthood are fairly easy to distinguish among themselves.
How to breed Schubert barbs
Breeding these fish is a very simple process. Most often, their spawning occurs directly in the conditions of a common aquarium, but in order to increase the breeding efficiency, it is recommended to use a separate spawning. There you will certainly need to place a sufficient number of plants with small leaves, for example, Javanese moss is perfect for this purpose. Also, as a replacement, you can use a thread from nylon, which is important to confuse greatly.
Regardless of which option you choose, you should pay attention to the fact that in spawning it is important to provide shelter for the female. This is due to the fact that during the spawning period the male acquires aggressiveness. Lighting should not be bright; waterflood vegetation can be placed on the water surface. Optionally, you can install or not install a filter, but if it does, then you must select the minimum power.
As usual, spawning begins in the early morning hours, just before dawn. The male barbus begins to swim near the female, forcing her to swim to the site that he picked up for reproduction. When the female is completely ready, she lays a couple of hundred eggs once, and the male fertilizes them. As soon as this happened, it is recommended to put both fish into a common aquarium so that they do not begin to eat fertilized eggs.
After a couple of days, yellowish pale eggs will begin to hatch, and after a few more days the embryo will begin to consume the contents inside the yolk sac. After the fry begin to swim in the spawning grounds, they can be offered as feed fodder, egg yolks and feed. Given the high sensitivity of fry and eggs to direct sunlight, it is necessary to ensure that the aquarium is in the shade for the next couple of weeks after the spawning.
